Lunar Eclipse, Winter Solstice
The 2010 Winter Solstice was a pretty unique one. An event of this particular kind hasn't occurred in over four hundred years - and won't occur for another four hundred or so years. A full lunar eclipse on the day of solstice. Astrology buff or not, it was worth sitting in the driveway, cold, sipping whiskey, and watching the moon turn red.
The Monument Fire
Homes burned, in some cases livestock was abandoned, and the few routes leading away from Sierra Vista was at once dotted with trucks piled high and, then, left vacant as the air thickened. Uncredentialed - and late to the game - I was stuck behind the roadblocks. But I could smell the fire in my living room; the smoke blotted-out the sun from my Bisbee home, on the other side of Mule Mountain Pass. These are the few images I was able to gather.
4th Avenue Street Fair
One of the truly democratized events in Tucson, the 4th Avenue Street fair attracts a wide variety of characters, from downtown hipsters to The Foothills' nouveau riche. Artists, musicians, and food vendors descend upon the 4th Avenue shopping district twice annually; I always try to get down there to talk to some of my favorite artists and take a peek at all of the interesting characters.
All Souls' Procession
The All Souls Procession is an all-inclusive community event in Tucson, Arizona. People descend upon the downtown shopping districts in elaborate costumes, many having constructed their own altars and floats with wire, papier-mâché, and buckets of paint. We write letters and wishes to the dead, deposit them into the ceremonial urn, and light it ablaze at the end of the procession. It's a sight to see.
