I've always enjoyed the notion of 'abstract photography.' Since the lens was constructed to record reality, there is no room for abstraction, at least in the academic sense. While working at the Center for Creative Photography, however, I discovered the works of Aaron Siskind; I found his images remarkably appealing. It is at this point that I began to experiment with abstraction myself.

Objects photographed are object stripped of their context. Typically, essays and photo-captions are included to add context, frame the discussion around the content. Many of these images aren't so much abstract as they are de-contextualized objects, emptied of meaning. I am hoping that form and color - rather than being rigid descriptors - carve out something less tangible and more emotive.

I'm not the first to do this, but I like the idea of forcing myself to make one new photograph every day. Just like writers set schedules and develop exercises, I believe that it's important to produce something new - anything new - every single day. The rules are simple - I will add one new image to this gallery every single day. Each image will have been produced on the day it's posted. I expect some of these to be complete failures, but expect some to shine bright.

Sparsely populated, this gallery is a small collection of experiments with night photography. These images fall under the aegis of 'experimental' in the sense that night photography is an area in which I possess very little practical knowledge or experience. I am considering, however, beginning working on a more cohesive series of images like this.

One month down, and I realize this is more difficult than it seems. If I miss one day, it all comes tumbling down, so I think all the time about what to photograph, when to sit down and rake through the images I've gathered that day, and which one I'm least embarrassed by. Little victories and little failures along the way, but I'm enjoying the ongoing challenge.
